Throughout the years I’ve been tasked with producing commissions in a wide spectrum of forms, from custom prints, to furniture, to 3D printed miniatures, to this recent colored pencil piece. I’m a fan of a challenge and have knowledge working with all kinds of materials. Just ask!

why Print?

Matthew Torchiana Hoban has been designing, carving, etching, exposing, inking, and pressing handmade prints since 2015. He was first exposed to the world of printmaking at the Tyler School of Art, but has maintained his print practice ever since, through his MFA program at UGA, and since moving back to the Philadelphia region three years ago. Now, he runs a printshop out of his studio, with a screenprint T-Shirt Press, and a full etching and relief press.

Many of the labor intensive mediums of print have been pushed to the wayside with the mass production of contemporary society, but a handful of artists still maintain these passed down traditions. It’s a group of materials and processes whose particular aesthetics and inherent physicality still hold weight that digital media cannot parallel. A certain care, practice, and level of attentiveness are needed to make quality handmade prints, and I believe you’ll find that palpable in each of these.
